Try 4-5-1. You should be able to dominate possession still without giving up so many chances. I just tried 3-4-3 with my RM in a defensive role. I'm quite certain the GE punished me because it wasn't even close.

It wasn't secret. They said they were going to penalize unnatural formations. However, the formation I played is natural, just not symmetric.
what's considered unnatural??
Technically I'd consider 3-6-1 natural but only barely. 3-5D, 3-6M, 1-3F is natural and provided there is some symmetry among their horizontal placement.
I wish they could just tell us exactly what's the most optimal.
Then we'd have too many clone teams. I wish we knew less. Everyone building 2:1:1 in hockey is... well... blargh. Imagine every player and every formation was the same in soccer? Defeats the fun. I do wish there was more flexibility. You can make a fast team and not be penalized for having too little aerial ability.
Exact, Solution to avoid clone teams is not hiding details, it's giving more flexibility and choices.

There isn't one optimal formation. What you said exists, it's just some formations are penalized. As they should be, like 7-2-1 for example. The question is how penalized are 3-6-1 and the 3-4-3 I played on Tuesday?
