That's pretty much a managers decision. I personally have a squad of around 20 players. My first 11 are my best guys, and then I have at least 1 or 2 players for each position who step in as the B team or reserves for interchanges mid-game.
I do have 200-300 AI guys, but they don't play much in league games as are training still. Eventually they'll join the B team, then make reserves and if good, make the first 11.

im the opposite with a squad of around 40, which was 50 until the other day. I have my best 15 or so, and then another complete squad of 15-16 year olds, youth that will develop into the first team one day. Then i have about 10 players or so whose job is to earn my money. I bought them cheap and training them up to sell them on in the future.
Oops, realised after typing that, that it was after the match. Comiserations

9 points clear of relegation with 3 games to go I am a lock for top flight next season
My season went almost exactly as hoped now time to get on with the training camp!

My lads have a trend going on with the odd seasons. I need to make some off season moves to compete good next season though.
You think you can hold onto 2nd place? A loss or OT could change things up
