Why isn't it that simple?

Well, I think part of why people complain about football is that it tends to be an unjust game. In RL it often is.
There are few scoring opportunities and even fewer goals, compared with most other team sport. That leaves actually more room for 'strange' results; its just more likely that a worse team wins when the shooting statistics is 2:6 in football instead of say 10:30 in hockey.
I think that is an important part of football: the unpredictability, sometimes the unfairness as some would say (I often have, too).

Jimbo, you said that there are probably a thousand matches a day that are unjust or strange. Ok, and how many matches are there in general on a regular day? I don't know, 10 000? So that would be something around 10%.
Whatever, take for example the last match day in german first Bundesliga. From the nine matches that took place I would say there were four where the better team did not win (I was attending of of them) and one where the greater team 'by name' (Bayern Munich) lost to a 'cheaper' team (Dortmund). So look at the ratios, compare to ppm. And you could find things like that any given match day in rl football.
The results in ppm and the way they are calculated (as vlady said situation after situation) reflect that. A way arround the 'unfairness' would be to probably raise the number of attacks and shots, but then you would have lots of matches that end 6:5 or 8:3. But that wouldn't be football anymore.
So if you think that is broken in ppm, than you should probably say football in general is broken.

I am far from saying that the engine works perfectly and ppm-football is finished, there are some things that need to be done. But the ongoing complains about matches being unjust and random points in the totally wrong direction.

How come the player rating of my players are, for almost the entire team, one point lower than the last game, in which i played in the exact same line up? I mean, i did play at home first and away now, which probably has an influence, but it was a derby.

Secondly I would really like to know whether the aggressiveness functions as it should be. My team made 15 fouls today (1 yellow, 1 double yellow), against 8, 6, 12 and 8 in previous games. I expect my players to avoid cards at all cost when playing this way, but so far i've gotten 8 yellow cards and 2 reds.

Besides the usual injuries for top players, this means missing out on a few more players. Jolly good fun.

Can someone tell me how teamwork and individual skill are calculated?

Specially what teamwork is?

No idea exactly. Figure that out, you figure out the inner workings of the soccer game. Teamwork is basically how well your tactic is suited for the players you have in those positions.

I'm under the impression individual skill is related to attributes of your players (not OR but relevant attributes for their positions) while teamwork has something to do with where players are located on the field vs their ideal position.

I don't feel personally offended, but find to mark inactive teams with a religious symbol is not very appropiate

A blue or red dot could do the job instead...
