Style of play
The right style of play may also help you achieve a better result. There are two things to remember. First: For every style of play there is an effective counter-tactic. Second: Every team has different strengths and weaknesses and therefore different styles of play may suit different teams. Another important thing is, whether you are the favorite or the underdog coming into the game.

I reread the whole season 7 change, nowhere does it say tactics do not matter anymore, that above is pretty clear that tactics still matter. Weather it is a bug is another matter, I have only used Counter Attack in my 2 games, but i used them based on history of the people i played. Will have to see if strength changes, seems like it may be a bug.

Obviously using the new mechanism its easy to find out which formations provide your strongest team strength, but tactics can be used to counter whatever your best formation is so tactics still play a big part, its just a little more obvious how tactics influence the strengths and weaknesses of teams.

The Admins/Devs have themselves mentioned on the Q&A forums that they toned down the tactic importance. And your description of Style of Play is the same as it was since season 1, they don't change the guides.

they change the guide.

They add new rules but they don't change old rules that they tweak. They aren't going to add to the Style of Play somewhere that reads "not as important as it used to be". Thats why they report those small changes like that on the forums.

I believe that the new emphasis on the use of more attributes that the primary and secondaries may be influencing a lot of what we have seen so far. In my first game I demolished a team that was at least 10 strength points higher than mine, but I have been training all attributes since the beginning of last season (which I did poorly on and required a relegation/promotion series win to stay up). I have no illusion that my team is that much better than the competition, but I believe that with the right tactics (yes tactics) I have a better chance this season than last.

Acutally it has been mentioned. Just look through conversations in the international Q&A even on page 320 people start to mention the reduction again. Even other more active forum people are talking about it. TB & Mrk1 whom I see talk religiously on the forums know about it. I myself remember seeing that mentioned somewhere in the forums. And just because a change is made does not mean that it is mentioned in the guide. The reduction of the goalie stars isn't mentioned in the forums.

Reduction of the goalies numbers is mentioned in the Hockey News articles on the main page under "Season 7 and Improved Game Engine".

Congratulations in jumping in the middle of a discussion without any info. The point i was making is info can be shared about this game without making it into the guide!

They have NOT changed the guide to say that tactics are less of a factor - how would they even do that and why? New people learning the game find that information pointless and confusing, that's why it will never be in the guide.

So, just because they didn't mention a tweak in the guide doesn't mean they didn't do something to change the game. If they mentioned it anywhere, then, yes, they changed it to make it less of a factor. And a large mistake, IMO.
