no, do not have to buy credits, theres a great video that explains the rest I'll find the link for you

on youtube if you search for vids by trueblue you can find some.

In short (hopefully) to set the lineup go to the games, lines page. Then just go through and edit each line. I wouldn't advise doing the auto set lines option. Read the guide completely to see what attributes you want for each position.. and much other valuable info. DONT forget to set your powerplay and penalty kill lines also!
The positions are wingers, centers, defenders, and goalie. The guide will help you pick who to put where.
