They shifted it to make it more regional based on time zone. Less travel for everyone. What I don't get is how you have the NE teams (Mtl, Ott, Bos, Tor) then they toss in SE teams (TBL, Flo etc.) completely skipping the mid-eastern teams (Carolina for example). I'm guessing that's because the snow birds in Florida want to watch their hometown teams play.
it should change things up for the divisions/conferences. I wish there was still a top 16 teams that made the playoffs, then the conferences with 8 teams aren't handicapped by having additional teams in them, on the other hand, there will be some insane playoff rivalries built with these alignments.
yah, definately for the snowbirds, they know how to fill the seats.
not sure how the 7 teams / 8 teams is fair, but maybe they're leaving it open for expansion? You don't think they would do you? They cant fill half the arenas now...

No certainly not. I find it comical they still included Phoenix. WHY DO YOU HAVE A TEAM IN THE DESERT! One that loses gobs of money too! Oh ya, Bettman put it there and can't admit it's failed.
I suppose they could add wild card spots to the playoffs, top 3 in each conference, and 4 wild card spots dependent on points/stats
It really makes no difference, if you really want to argue that, why not argue every team should be in it's own conference with robot teams that are exactly identical.
Otherwise how is it fair each team is matched up against completely different teams in each conference?
Would you rather be in a conference with 6 other teams stronger than yours, or in a conference with 7 other teams weaker than yours?

This means Quebec or Hamilton is getting a team sooner than later. The 16-14 system can't hold that long before some GM complains.
Good point. If Phoenix moved it would just make that division a 7 team division and another division an 8 team division.
Nice solution for Phonix situation. If it goes to Quebec or even Toronto they simply move franchise in with Montreal - Toronto - Ottawa conference. Leaves 2 -7 and 2 -8 team conferences,
yah, you're right. After more thought, it shouldn't really matter. Especially with how the schedule is going to be laid out. I like that there will be a home and home with every team.
The main reason was the west coast teams would complain when they travel say from Vancouver to Minnesota which is 2h time difference for a division game. Marketers have found that games out of the timezone aren't watched especially by younger fans.
oh yah, the travel will be much easier for the west coast teams than it is currently. Plus, if my understanding of the new playoffs is correct, we could see a Canucks vs Blackhawks final some day. Epic.
