Probably because in 2nd half your opponent substitued two of his defenders for defenders with much lower rating, maybe he also changed formation in 2nd half.

So that should be it. From my experience you can not change a players position to a spot already covered by another player, even if you move him away in the same sub. He must have moved away in an earlier setting. (That's I think also why a sub after a sent-off has to be done to a different spot.)
