How is the market unsustainable? Not that I disagree, but more that I'm curious as to how the adjective applies in your view.
It's much cheaper to raise your own players via the SA. All my top line guys, with one exception, are Canadians I've drafted... The Market is good for filling holes in the lineup, but it's also expensive...
I basically use the market to make money and fund my facilities.

The price of purchasing quality free agents will range upwards into the millions. The day-to-day expenses of maintaining the salaries of foreign players is 25% more than for local players.
I would invest in the SA purely for training camp bonuses, so it is not as though I could simply divert the money that would be spent on the SA to the market and the aforementioned daily expenses.
In the short term, free agent additions can be effective players, but when their contracts come due, the cost of keeping them can become prohibitive. Therefore, without a strong farm system, I don't think that a team can compete at a high level on a sustained basis.
The same goes for the HR and staff members. I'm paying some staff members upwards of 2k per day. That would be more like 1.5k per day if they were local. That's a total that adds up in the long run and it is bad business. Having a staff built on foreigners is an unsustainable strategy.
All this is imho and not grounded in any empirical evidence.

So... it is not so much that the market is unsustainable as it is obsolete given the superiority of pulls from one's own organization. I've found this to be the case on my team as well.
I wouldn't say that it is obsolete... I could still buy players that would merit roster consideration. I choose not to because of the immediate and long-term costs associated with the endevaour.
The Market is okay if you're new to the game, and can find a player (at a reasonable price) to help booster your overall team rating. Otherwise, good for selling only.....
Bah. I can't even sell players on the market. I've probably lost money in putting players/staff on the market due to lack of bids. Maybe one day when my team is so awesome that super-awesome players can't buy ice time...
I friggin' hate the time period between regular season and playoff action. Every season I never get to prepare for game one.....simply frustrating. Keep it up, and I may not return for another season....
Ist round away playoff victory. Should get a good crowd for the next home game. This will be a tough series.
That was a big win on the road, Gandalf. An upset over the Hornets and the subsequent top 4 finish would be very impressive for your first full season as GM.
It's unfortunate that I had to draw the Blazers. My chances are slim, but never count out the Raging Pigs.

For fun thouhjt it was time for a contrarian view on the market. I have used the market extensively to build my team. It is beneficial when you are brand new. The team I was given had 25 players Avg OR 122 with highest at 142. I looked at the players and thought maybe 6 had long term value. So in my first 6 weeks I purchased 18 players at a cost of about $150,000 on average. My belief is I will sell them eventually for more. Could not sell any of my players. I did not want them nor did anyone else.
I went on the basis of buy 1 player and fire one and gain at least 50 OR in the process. I brought my average team OR from 122 to 176 and won a few games. I like winning.
Now in my first full season I need to be more strategic. My academy is at level 7 and soon will be 8, I have put aside money to build it up tp 9. I have purchased 3 more players including 1 for 1,25MM. I have funded this years purchases from my own sales on the market.
I am starting to get better players from my academy 170 to 190 OR and 1 at 214. They are not good enough yet to crack my stating line up. The randomness of the pulls does not always fill your weakspots. I keep getting good goalies but not wingers. I expect the academy will soon start filling my needs and create revenue by selling excess players.
I currently have 7 of my original players ( 2 of them are starters). I have 17 market players on the team with an average OR of 199. Al but 1 are staters. My other starters are pulls. Stikk a long way to go to be a top team.

Your strategy has worked out pretty well for you.
We joined this league at about the same time. I bought cheap (10-30k), young players with similar to slightly higher OR levels compared to the rest of my roster. My focus was on adding players with potential to grow. You added better players, and they led to greater short-term success as you beat me handily in the playoffs.
This season, your success has spilled over. You beat me by 6 points in the standings and finished one spot ahead of me, albeit one crucial spot. No offence intended, Mangus, but your Hornets are a much easier first round match-up than the Kamloops Blazers.
The trade-off is that my arena and facilities are slightly better than yours. We'll see if that leads to me over-taking you in the standings next season. Here's to hoping.
