You should be penalized for that as already stated, but you also have friendlies in which you can check this yourself...
Personally I wish a relatively straight forward game like this would use about 30 fixed formations. For us that played football for real, its just amazing to watch some of the absolute braindead formations that appear here on the pitch. Its even more amazing when you actually lose to them.
I do give credit to PM for at least giving penalties for some of the more idiotic ideas. Still, I remember one manager game that went with 20 basic formations. It also had an appendix explaining the strategy behind each one. Not only did it make the game better, but it taught Newbs basic strategy concepts to appreciate real football.

I'd rather play with "free formations" than "pre-made formations".
Even though I might agree with you about some braindead formations that make no sense... These should never exist.
I think just setting up some validation on tatics' page would fix this. Like for example:
- At least 3 defenders on the defensive line.
- At least 1 forward
- At least 3 midfielders
If you don't meet the requirements, then you can't save your tatics.
That would be enough to avoid crazy and senseless formations I believe.

I agree with you completely. I suggested zone restrictions like yours before, but it seems it may be too hard for the developers to employ. Clearly if they could it would a big improvement to the game.
As for the 4-2-4 a 4-4-2 with offensive wingers would cover this. Cant really think of any day club that commits 4 fully dedicated forwards leaving the rest of the pitch wide open.

In reality unless they put in fixed formations this is not soccer. What you see in here in PM is the formations far more something you would expect in NFL football.
One prime example is the use of the "flooding the zone" strategy, that is too often seen here on PM. and for some reason is successful.
This works great in the NFL. A quarterback will flood one side of the field with receivers, putting great pressure on the defensive coverage.
The only thing this is this is soccer. Its a two way game. The formations are unteachable. How are players going to handle their marking assignments with the schoolyard garbage that even top teams are using? The reality its impossible to mark with the NFL style crap were seeing here. In reality these clubs would be eaten alive by the other clubs counter.
There's enough accepted formations to match any teams strategy here. Shouldnt we want to play real soccer?

Hi guys I was wondering if someone here played 2 wingers on one side, if you did can you send me a match report so I can take a look or just write what you think of that.
Ryan, if you read my post above this double wing crap that for some reason is being allowed isnt soccer. If you ever played the game, you would know there's no way to mark and defend your opponent when your committed to one side of the field. The double wing idea only works if your Peyton Manning throwing to 3 wide receivers in the NFL. Its hard to understand why PM wants to make this a video game instead of playing real soccer.
Ppm do want it to be like a real game. Yes, you can play 2 wingers but your team will be punished for it.
Not always:
soccer.powerplaymanager.c...
punished - soccer.powerplaymanager.c...

Yes, and in real life weird formations will sometimes work also.
