Basicly i think you are right with your idea of how the strenght is calculated. But i dont think they just take the average of all players secondary skills for calculating the individual strenght. For instance the passing of a midfield has a higher influence on calculation than the passing of the goalkeeper.
Exactly, it can't be as simple as novakoni says. Of course individual strength for the team has to be an average somehow but also needs to be varied by the field position of a player.
But average IS says not all about a match. As the guide tells us it at most determines ball possession and the number of offensive plays a team gets. And as vlady said several times these individual plays are calculated with a contribution of some stats of individual players. Shooting et.al. against Goalkeeping for example. Of course vlady could be wrong but for the time being I believe him.

Well, I really hope you are right - but I am afraid it's not a case.
I know managers that training shoot to defenders and they have pretty high Ind Skill.
I hope that next game engine improvements will be in direction of involving individual plays.
Why there is no assists or number of passes or goal chance passes or crosses or .... in the game statistics ??
I think the reason for that is - there is no individual plays in game engine. Every calculation goes with average values and only the scorer is randomly picked - with largest chance for attacker to be the one.

your opponent has a slightly stronger team and had home advantage.
just because the display of individual skill takes into account the average of the whole starting lineup, doesnt mean that this number is used in the engine itself. As a matter of fact it isnt. The team strength indicators are only for your guidance and they are output from the game calculation rather than input.

So the success depents merely from the player who is in action (and his skills) and the direct opponent (and his skills) ??

isn't there a contradiction in the guide about speed and forwards?
in the guide, player section, you can see in the table that for Forwards the most important skill is speed but in the definition about speed it states that speed is more used by side players
i can understand this for the wide forward but why is it most important secondary skill for a central forward?

- speed for central forward represents his positioning in offensive plays.
