Well, the energy is still questionable. Do all those 3 players played yesterday and past month? I guess player3 is playing lot.
Player1 missed 2 friendly matches. Player2 and player3 played all matches till now !
Guide:
As the career longevity decreases and the player gets older, the ability to improve decreases too.
Voila !

I'm not convinced because I get pretty equal numbers with my own players' comparison.
player1:
16yo, CL 5, Q 51
Avg. training Sho +0.46
player2:
18yo, CL 5, Q 53
Avg. training Pas +0.47
player3:
20yo, CL 5, Q 57
Avg. training Att +0.51

This is because players' low qualities ! If they all would have quality 1, average practice would be around 0.01 for all of them !
These differences can be easily seen on higher qualities, over 90.

And CL is NOT EXACT value. It's a rounded approximate of the exact value. CL 5 could be 4.5 or almost 5.5, for example. The difference between 4.5 and 5.5 is over 18%.
CL is not exact value, but for training purposes it is, it doesn't matter if CL is 4,1 or 4,8, player will still train the same - in this matter he will still train like his CL is 4
every CL level has 4 sub-levels, and they are only for decision whether CL will drop or not

Actually CL has 7 sub-levels. Anyway, I agree with you.
How do you know this? And where can I get such details?
