If they have to much it will increase their penalties. But if Wingers and D-men don't have the right amount they can not get the puck or to control it.

Why is there an limit on the time I can start buying FAs in hockey? I'm coming back after a few years off and don't ever remember this as a thing. I feel like being an vet my team is getting punished with the crappy players I start with and no ability to improve my team for at least a week

While I do think they should lower the number of days until managers could use the market (5 days?) in order to hopefully keep more new managers interested in the beginning; I also think it's beneficial to not allow new managers to potentially bankrupt their team in the market before they realize how to effectively run a team.

Keeping new players away from the staff market is the most important part of the delay for sure - even 11 days isn't enough to keep some people from promptly bankrupting their team.

What factors influence OTR other than game results?

Problem is after 11 days you can buy absolutely anyone. Other games like this simulate the fact that high salary players would refuse to ever sign a contract to play in my podunk rink/stadium or in a low level league, such a limitation would probably help more than having an 11 day wait period. The ability to buy low wage players with low bids in the first 2 weeks would probably help retention some. Staff hiring could be limited in the same way.

Thats pretty much it. If you beat a team that you aren't "supposed" to, you get a bigger OTR bump. If you crush a team that you are "supposed" to beat, the bump is smaller.

In other words, the amount of the increase is proportional to the quality of the team you play. But its only game results that affect OTR.

I'm not sure that a limitation on league level would be effective, since a division IV league in another country might actually be a good league (unless the limitation took this into account). It also wouldn't be fair to limit a player based on other the quality teams in their league, if such a limitation were to be considered. A limitation on purchasing better players based on arena or net worth might work, though that would make it even harder for newer players to catch up and take away some choices from newer players.

Honestly, the market already sort of keeps new players from buying the elite players. There are different tiers of prices for different calibers of players. As a team improves, it can afford better players (and sell better players) and move up a few tiers over time. Of course, a team could save for 10 seasons to buy one good player and neglect its facilities or overpay for a bad player. The risk of overpaying for bad players based on excessive market prices is the main justification for the limitation.

In the scope of this game, 11 days isn't really much time. A team that loses interest may be less likely to retain interest beyond one or two seasons, at least without being lucky enough to start in a league where it is easy to quickly start winning.

For staff, I would actually recommend increasing the waiting period. For players, I would keep the waiting period, or maybe extend it, however, it might help to give new players some sort of vouchers (each worth a fixed amount of money) to bid on a few players from the market to help jumpstart their team and allow them to try the market. It could be part of some sort of market tutorial.

Yeah, that's a good point about the timescale of the game - if someone doesn't have the patience to wait 11 days to use the market, are they really going to have the patience to wait 3-4 YEARS for their hot new sports academy pull to train up and be usable in their starting lineup?

No but buying some 300-400 ORs for 50-100k would be nice since the season already started since they don't start teams with players with ORs close to necessary to compete at the division they are in
