The U20s didn't fare as well as the other Aussie teams going down 2-0 to Serbia overnight.

It looked like a thrashing was on the cards after conceding two goals in the first two minutes but the team settled down after that, not conceding further goals but unable to hit the back of the net.

The result leaves us in 6th place in our group, three points away from qualification. I think the draw will work better for us next season so I'm hopeful we can make those three points up.

Next week we travel to Algeria for a friendly before the PPM Challenge Cup.

I took the opportunity to play what I think might be next year's first XI to give them a bit of experience and chemistry so I'm happy enough with the result even though we really should have won it.

We now get three Challenge Cup games over the next week

Just the three, a win and two losses sees us bow out at the group stage. We'll have to pick up some of Malikas's guns next season

You're doing well with the group we've got Crico! It's just that over time, more and more players naturally get sold. By the time you get to 20, the number of players still in top facilities are much lower than before. The Senior squad gets around this by only picking the very best over several seasons, but the U20s and U17s need fresh stars constantly.

The teams were closely matched so in another situation we might have won it. I'm not too fussed. There are a lot of new players in the squad and I want to try them out, see who works best where.

Building NT experience is always good!

I have now given game time to every member of the squad bar one (who was injured) and I'm forming an idea of how we might qualify for the World Cup.

We recorded our second win of the season, 2-1 over Belgium:

It was a welcome win because they are in our group and one of the teams we need to be beat if we are to qualify for the World Cup.

Next week we play Belgium in our first competitive game of the season. We need to win all the first three games to have a chance of making the playoffs so the pressure will be on.

They played on low intensity, which helped our cause and will see us leapfrog them into 5th spot on the table. The teams in 3rd and 4th both recorded wins so we haven't yet narrowed that gap but it's a good start!
