those players were all UFA and national team members. it is quite possible that they would have been bought by someone else.
Nonsense. Since those players were important to their respective teams it's also highly likely that they would have been retained. I had no interest in losing the player. Judging from my previous dealings I would say that the likelyhood of me moving on from said player would be less than a 10%. What was the second highest bid?

Out of curiosity, how do you determine such compensation amount? In its current state the market heavily favors contract length above everything else. Those players ultimately had 0 days of contract at their former teams, which on the free market will draw only minimal interest.
They were not sold at free market. They were sold with whole season ahead. That is opposite to what are you saying.
