I'm a new manager and am in my first league cup tournament. I'd like to rest my starters in the coming week in order for them to be well rested for the first round on Saturday.
What I'm wondering is whether this is a good tactic and will actually increase their energy, or whether I shouldn't bother and just play them in a couple friendlies this week.
I'm almost certain I'll get through my own leagues tournament and on to the Superleague so it won't be a sprint but more like a marathon....
Please advise.

Players don't use a lot of energy in friendlies. Especially if playing on Very Low. It takes 50 friendlies on VL to lose one point of energy. On Normal it would take 10 friendlies to lose one point of energy.
I am playign with my young talent to see how they do this week... I beleive there are training bonuses when players play. Just an extra benefit of them playing.
I thought players actually train less when they play in matches but get the benefit of gaining experience....
You are correct, sir. Training is slightly lower for those who play matches.
