I'm curious when other people decide to do training camps and the benefits/drawbacks of having them at different times of the season.
I try to do them at the end of the season. I try to wait until all competitive games are finished. So I'm usually way too late. My starters are almost always in camp during the first week of every season. Not the smartest thing to do, but doing it this way means less thinking/planning on my part

I'm looking more for opinions about using training camps rather than reasons not to use training camps.
But it appears that I have a different perspective on the uses of the training camp than some of the other teams.

Mine are going to be comprised of prospects and MAYBE my starting point guard. None of the other players on my team are worth it with their crap Qs.
I am dedicating my training camps completely to my prospects too because I have a lot of good prospects. If my starters were better, I might focus on padding their stats to remain competitive.
I generally do one camp at the end of the season after the playoffs and one when I play 3 teams I am almost guaranteed to beat (or 3 teams I am almost guaranteed to lose to). I might also choose to do a camp once I clinched the playoffs if I don't care too much about ranking (my team in handball is a playoff team that has basically clinched the playoffs, but it probably won't promote, so I am running my camp now).
On the other hand, at the start of the season, you will have access to the extra OR for every game after the camp. Whether this is the optimal approach would depend on circumstances (the value of the extra OR based on current OR levels, the quality of your backups, whether your starters or prospects would go to camp, the schedule, etc.).

I have 3 starters that are worthy of camp attendance. the rest of the camp attendees are all prospects. I run my camps early because my second string is still capable of carrying a game. I expect that to change over the next couple seasons and will adjust camp starts accordingly.
