It doesn't help that most of the top TC/Academy team in Canada are having the worst luck in term of prospect lately...
Agreed. Next season's crop of 18 yr. olds is small. The following 3 seasons get better in terms of number of players, but not necessarily in quality. I think it will become harder and harder for us to field competitive teams on the two younger national teams. The loss of two teams with better facilities (Gold Fish and Longueuil) has not made the situation any better either. I look forward to better times.
Small consolation that both of the two teams in the U19 world championship finals came out of the same qualification group as Canada. Maybe next season, we can start in a group that has fewer heavyweights.
U19 lost today 88-82 to a much stronger Lithuanian team. A much closer game than I anticipated. We were actually ahead by one with 7 minutes to go after being down 9 at the half. Chemistry and experience gained from last season appear to be helping. With a really strong defensive effort in the preliminary round, we might just manage to qualify. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Next game is another friendly against Lithuania again and will give us a clearer picture of the bumpy road ahead.
In the first qualifying game of this season's world championships, the U19 group defeated the favoured Swedish team 63-54. We kept it close through three quarters with dogged defense, then used our depth to outscore them in the final frame. A good and optomistic start, all things considered.
Canada's U19 squad jumped out to a 12 point lead at the half, then snoozed through the third quarter, but came alive enough in the final frame to sqeak out a 6 point win over a very determined team from Norway. Final 82-76.
Today's U19 game pits Canada (ranked 19th) against Bulgaria (ranked 11) which I'm guessing makes us the underdog. Hopefully, the "unfair home team advantage" will work in our favour. We will need a good defensive effort to keep this game close and further our hopes of advancing as this division may be decided by GAvg rather than wins/losses.
Bulgaria 96--Canada 71. Not a surprise, as they are the top team in the division. We are at the half way point, and one point up on Sweden. Friday's game at home against Sweden will likely decide which of us will qualify. A win puts us in. A loss means it will likely be a GAvg decision.
Our win today over Norway 91-80 guarantees us a spot in the tournament finals. It will be more than interesting to see how far this underdog team can go. With the tougher competition at the higher level, we may be lucky to win a game. We will need our best defensive efforts to date, and great shooting in order to make some noise.
One more meaningless game against Bulgaria in the qualifying round, 2 friendlies against Romania, which will be spent working on chemistry, experience, and tactics, then off to the championship round. We are definitely an underdog with our highest team strength of 60 while most other qualifiers have a team strength of 70 or better.
Heavy underdog OTS-60) to powerhouse Chinese team (OTS- 79) today.
Just want to come out of this one with no more injuries !!

Thankfully no new injuries !
Took the beating I expected. Now we need some real good defensive work with a lot better scoring over the rest of the games to make a little noise. Have already come farther than I thought we could last season at this time. We are definitely the underdogs this season, but there may be some bite left yet.
