Always. I've tried playing the short-term manager game and it never works. Thinking long-term always bring the best results. Sure, at times you have to wait a season or 2 to see the full benefit, but it's always worth it.
I have a player like that whom i train as a midfield defence. I also have the opposite, whom i train as a midfield attack

Second - Difference between def-mid and att-mid at this level is so small - almost unrecognized.
If your midfield have 100 on mid, he should have around 16 at def and 9 at off - if you want him to be defensive midfield. So, potential at defense is not so important at all - maybe some other secondary skills.

Where do these numbers come from? In my mind that's way too small and so far from being real. I train my players more heavily in the non-applicable primary attributes. Their ratings aren't phenomenal but they perform way above their ratings.
Well - these is my calculations. There is no much space for practice def and att to midfielders. You have mid, pas, tec, hea, spe. So - I think it's around 8-10% to split for these 2 skills. So - I would say for DM at most 5-7% for def, and 2-3% for att.
And I am talking about ratings - maybe ratings isn't only that meters.
My best goal scorer is 75shot 65tech and get this... 25 off and speed and 13 pass and head

He takes PKs. Not FKs. He gets a 4 every game despite only having 25 primary. He'll never fetch much on the market - so I won't sell him. Especially since he is 4/6. Only training those 2 attys does ramp up his salary.

Yup. Always tinkering. He has like 30s and 40s for Qs in everything so I just ran with shot and tech which are 70s and 50s. Keep his OR reasonable. He seems to find the net way more than my 60OFF forward who gets 6 ratings all time time so hey... why change him?
He probably have high exp which seems to be vital for scoring.
My best scorer in the league has scored 16 out of 21 goals in the last 13-14 games or so, before that he had 20-22 games with 5 goals.
