Can someone give me some advice on how to proceed?

It was fun being the second best team last season after starting out a long time ago as a mediocre division III team. It looks like I'll even make the playoffs in the Champions League this season.

Unfortunately, my key player is being held ransom for an amount that I'm not sure that I should match. I also recently sold my second best keeper because my 3rd string keeper was getting close to catching up in a season or two.

Realistically, the best I can hope for is to try to be the second best team in the league. I can't afford to build a roster capable of competing with Chaos Theory beyond perhaps a few upgrades for 10m here and there. In any case, the average starter on my roster is younger than 80% of the Chaos Theory roster.

I can:
1) Sell all of my prospects and take out a large loan. I'd probably struggle to pay my bills. The player would just end up going back on the market again in 1-2 seasons.
2) I can sell a key player like Irving Sparks and replace him with an older player that is close enough (but end up with the same problem).
3) I can pay the ransom and try to sell the player for a profit afterwards. I would need an amount approaching half a billion to justify this. The player at issue is the 5th best soccer player in the PPM world though.
4) I could let the player go, sell all my players over 30 and give playing time to younger players. Losing this player will decrease my overall team rating from competitive for 2nd place to competing for 10th place while hoping I can do better in 5 seasons.
5) I could let the player go and sell all my prospects to buy players and try to tread water.
6) I could liquidate my roster and start over again. I'd probably wait until I'm at least eliminated from the Champions League since I can probably make the playoffs and win a few rounds even without the player. I also recently dumped 10 players, so it would probably be best to wait until the extra taxes go away. Unfortunately, I haven't really had much luck with the sports academy in soccer for a long time, so I don't really have any prospects worth building around. The players from when I had good luck are my current starters and near-starters. CL has devastated a lot of those formerly promising players.

I'm leaning towards 4, though 6 could be fun too. I might be able to earn a few hundred million to even a billion to jump start a rebuild.

You should do whatever you will find most fun and keep you playing PPM.

I kinda like the slow and steady acquisition of better players method myself (mostly bidding on free agents but occasionally a Sports Academy player makes the roster, though it's pretty rare in Soccer as compared to the other sports). It's not for everyone though, so if rebuilding is what you like, then that's what you should do.

I haven't really had the money to buy any players unless I looked for bargain older players that only cost $1m.

I think I'll just sell all of my good backup players, try to remain competitive for the remainder of the season (though being able to switch to a strong 2nd group of starters mid-season has been a big part of my competitiveness for the past few seasons), and try to sell the star player for a profit before his next free agency. I'm pretty sure I can get enough to make a profit on the 5th (4th until recently) best soccer player on PPM even if he's 34 (he's not going to start declining for at least 2 more seasons).

I'll sell the remainder of my older players and start the players in the 23-27 range next season. Getting rid of all but one foreign player and a lot of the older players should also save a lot on salaries for now.

It's probably better to try to remain somewhat competitive with the 23-27 range than to completely tank and lose $100m per season in sponsorships (probably about enough to ultimately offset salary savings). I'm also not too excited about buying a bunch of prospects at some point in the future and gambling on their CL.

The recent loss of tier III and half of tier II is worrisome. I didn't realize that U.S. soccer was doing that bad.

And we still have dead teams all over II. It's not looking great!

It's hard to keep the money balanced. I should probably get rid of my staff but struggling more in the past few seasons then before.

Is there anyway to decline promotion? Im currently looking at automatic promotion from the atrocious II. 3 and it would be horrible for competitiveness if this were to happen.

I am closing my team down so I have put my USA players up for sale.

I can understand. The game is only to log in and make sure I have my players... I don't have time to watch sales... I had to sell almost everything to make sure I'm not losing money in handball. Hockey is doing OK... In soccer I'm losing so I started to demolish facilities ):

Guys, there are 2 young midfielders on the market that you may want to look at. Montana's guy Foreman is on the U17 team now and is in line to play significant time. The current highest bidder is a foreigner with crappy facilities.

There is also a John Burnside, who is a 16YO that I'll add to the team if he's bought buy a club with good facilities. No bidders yet.

Please take a look. I nabbed Hamilton (on the U17 team) from a crappy foreign team already, and now I'm over my limit on players.
