Like I said, the book isn't about science (off topic). But it's trully funny
For those with a twitter account I just discovered the curiosity rover was there

There is also a sarcastic rover one which is pretty funny
Your comment totally makes sense now. Cool article! Amazing things are still being "born" in this 14-billion-year-old universe.
Well I don't know if this is the first picture of planet being born, but certainly sound effects "made it more familiar"
So, 70's.

Apparently, according to Brandon Carter, we have only got about 10,000. (further down the page)
In all honesty, I think we would be extremely lucky to make it that far.

That is based off of the "everyone has equal odds of being alive at any time" assumption. Not sure how valid that is to biological systems... we aren't alpha particles emitted from radioactive decay.
But I would agree, I'd give us a few hundred max. Current political, economic and environmental landscape are not that encouraging.

Curiosity got the brush out for the first time. I posted an animated gif online (not in link as PPM blocks tinypic):

It's by no means simple. It's a long process to get things commissioned and it is one of the last. We're next going to commission the drill. The exciting thing about the brush is that it removes the dust from rocks (obviously) which allows us to look underneath and see the actual rock (notice the whitish veins, that's perhaps a drywall material aka formed in water). Additionally, the instrument I work on can now measure pure rocks whereas before we would pick up a signal much of which was the dust.
