Afternoon all, I have just started the game and I'm really impressed so far.
However, my query is: if i set a player type to another position (def to mid for example) does this allow him to play in the new position as if it were his natural position?
Are there any negative side affects to this?

You can put any player in any position - the only thing that will matter in their performance is their statistics. The player type is just for your reference.

I read the guide but there was no mention of this particular query. I realise playing a goalkeeper in midfield may not be an astute tactical decision but I have a couple of players whose skills are suited to providing cover in several positions.

Invest in your youth academy, and you will soon find your young players from there will be better than what you start with.
If so far it covers your needs - don't mind a position name.. that have been given by You anyway
But, with time, players that has been "sharpened" for some position will not show same performance elsewere..

In general, facilities are the most important thing to invest in at first. Have a look at teams doing well to get an idea of what priority to put on upgrading them.
