I've always loved people not wanting to share the links. It has this beautiful artisan vs science feel

The actual tactics are secret at all... They are all over the forums if people research enough
. Plus... Google people!

This and the other articles on your site are very valuable, especially to us newer managers. Thank you Sam!
The Bonsai articles are my favorite
I just bought one last night and got back into it thanks to you, my children killed my 15 year old tree two years ago and I lost my mojo.

I understand where your coming from and why it was done this way. In my mind it is badly off, and those who can "research" their opponents have a drastic edge because of this "circle." Why I detest this is it makes a sport managing simulation into an overextended game of rock, paper, scissors of which sports is in no way like that. In my mind the counterattack and active forecheck is backwards partly because of what you pointed out that happens to be kind of backwards. An active forecheck does not work with defensive minded wingers, a counterattack needs defensive minded wingers. A counterattack is basically an active forecheck in a neutral zone trap system. An active forecheck relies on aggressive attacking forwards because it is designed to attack a weak D. If you don't want to take my word seriously just look at the Stanley Cup finals between the Hurricanes (active forecheck play style) and the Red Wings (counterattack,) the Hurricanes never were in that series despite the fact that they won one game losing in 5. Why? Detriot could play their counter style against the forecheck of the Hurricanes and tear them apart due to it. The Red Wings didn't win that year just because of better players but mostly because the Hurricanes played right into the Red Wings hand with their style. I doubt it can be changed now but at the same time it isn't so egregious that I will leave over it. I just see it as another (albeit big) flaw.
Errr Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup vs the Oilers. Not sure which S.C. you're referring to.
oh duh me.. the 01/02 season. Brain didn't go back that far. LOL
But the Hurricanes WERE in it for a while. Game 1 in Det went to the Canes, game 2 to Detroit.
Game 3 went to triple overtime, and if the Wings hadn't won that game, the series was a very different beast, so I do think that those tactics worked until the life was sucked out of the underdog after that loss. Also, it was the clutch and grab era, which equalized faster players.
I'm not sure how this fits into the wheel, but there is so much in sports that cannot be duplicated in a simulation game such as this. Hell, we don't even have a 'speed' category.
PS - paragraphs would make this much easier to read

well one thing's for sure: this game is not a simple rock paper scissors match, and it isn't even so all things being essentially equal. I'm convinced there's a small bit of randomness in the game engine, just to throw it off a bit

The clutch and grab part was very beneficial to the Hurricanes because the Red Wings were a faster team.
If you look at the tactics, ebb and flow of the game and add in a modern perspective the Canes were struggling to keep with the Red Wings.
Game 1 was more a lucky bounce in the end. The Canes struggled all of game 2 (which in my mind was the actual deciding game) and game 3 Detroit broke the Hurricanes will and Detroit forced their will from then on. The length of the game was Carolina grasping for breath (aka Irbe's rediculous play, it never should've gone ot in the first place) more than playing with Detroit. By the end of game 2 Detroit's speed and skill had Carolina in trouble. The only reason Detroit didn't sweep was because of Irbe.
Granted speed isn't strangely one of the "skills" but Detroit had a superior coach using better tactics with better players.
Carolina was in the series until late in the 3rd in the second game, if that long, because Detroit had control of game 2 and the series by the 2nd period.
Granted there is a limited amount that you can do with a simulation but Detroit's aforementioned style was superior. In the wheel it's the other way around due to the rock-paper-scissors manner the wheel is set up. That is my issue, the r-p-s.
PS- hope that helped
Final note- I lived in Carolina and watched with many friends. I wasn't disappointed that Carolina lost so much as Detroit won. My finals that year was the western finals between Detroit and Colorado. Was an Avs fan until Roy retired.
