yeah, but once I get there I cannot actually assign these players to the tasks I want them to carry on.
i think it only allows you to choose two captains. By assignments, do you mean substitutions, or something else entirely?
On the settings page there is also places to assign free kickers, corner kickers and shootout players among other things.
You click on the player to make the outline yellow then click on the empty jersey for the assignments.

click on the position to highlight the player you want to place and then the jersey under the task you wish them to perform.
I do that but nothing. Maybe it's because I am using Chrome? I'll test with another browser in a bit.
Do you see all the categories or just a line of 4 jerseys?
Before yesterday I only saw a vertical line of four jerseys. Not sure what changed to make it all visible now.

Now it works actually and I set up my player tasks.
Yes, before it was just 4 shirts vertically and nothing else.

I know I am reviving literally the oldest thread atm, but is there a certain advantage that team captains have?
The general consensus is that Captains increase the effectiveness of the players around him.
The soccer guide does not have a description of what the captain does, but the hockey guide contains this:
"Captain of the team increases the morale of the team and the other players then play better. This is applies especially to his linemates. An alternate captain carries out the role of the captain, if the captain cannot start in the game. "
Personally, I tend to put my highest experience players as captain/alternate. Other ideas include picking a captain from the strongest part of your team (example: midfield) in order to increase the impact (assuming the captain "bonus" scales with strength) or picking a captain from the weakest part of your team to try to "cover up your weakness".
I would suggest trying each of those strategies (and potentially others) to see which one works best for you. Friendlies are always a good time to try tactics/lineup experiments.
