I don't know why either to be honest. TSN did a story on it during last year's playoffs. Their thoughts were jealousy (of the city, everyone saying how beautiful the city is) and the Sedins (they don't play a hard-hitting Canadian-style game). To me though, those two reasons are all the more reason to like the team. The Sedins are magic workers... that is when they aren't taking jumping elbows to the face.
we dont care about the rest of the country right now though, its all about the Canucks Nation (which transcends borders).
