So there is this default 4-4-2 that some teams are playing where they haven't set their lineups at all.
Anyone found a good counter? I have tried a few setups that should work in real life and not so much.

I'm a bit confused with the setups here. Some people through every one forward, some fall back a lot. I'm confused too.
I have the impression that a lot of the results this season will be decided by random factors rather than strategy. They might have to dial down the "unpredictable factor".

I like the different formations soccer has to offer. I'm technically running a 4-4-2, but with my mids in a "diamond" formation.
I saw one team running a 4-4-2 with a heavy stagger to the right, I assume to accommodate right preferred players?

I meant moreso if a guy is default, so 4-4-2 with normal aggression, playing through all 3 etc, what has worked to defeat the normal setup - this would be akin to playing low breakup vs normal in hockey.
Today I'm trying a 4-3-3 w/ 4 across the back... 2 defensive midfielders close to the middle at LM and RM... then an attacking midfielder below the forwards, forming a pyramid. One LF and RF far to the outside just above the midfield squares... and one central striker pushed all the way up. We'll see how that works against the base 4-4-2, its all trial and error right now.
I tried that a few times with 3 f's spaced in between the other teams def. Didn't work too well.
I've had good effect by choosing my attacking area as only one and focusing on defense.

I'd rather play with more in the midfield, but because of an injury to my only good player... I can only get 3 terrible midfielders on the pitch, the rest of my "midfielders" are comically atrocious.
My idea got lambasted too, the team was on avg 3 points weaker per stats (Granted 6's vs 9's)
and I played 5 mid, 4 back and only one forward, they scored 2 goals quickly and easily - my two best players are my CD's.
Not really sure how a weaker offensive team scored so easily on my team that was playing for a draw - oh well.

I still haven't figured anything out about this game Heck I can't even get the formation correct. I have it set as a 3-4-3 but the game shows it as default. I have alts setup but the game shows it as none :/ Not that the alts mean anything since there isn't the ability to set play times.
Tie again, but why has your guess as good as mine.

I HAVE A TACTIC TO USE.... READ YOUR FREAKING PLAYERS NAMES CLOSELY!!! I have two players with same name. One goalie one mid. Last two games I had them switched. Somehow I won but it was a goalie difference of 26 and 11.
