I only bought managers at the end of the season. But before the big rush. Prices get crazy right at the end. I would then dump them as soon as I signed all of my sponsor deals. But you have to get em earlier and earlier. It doesn't save a ton of money doing this though.
I kept Sporting Directors, but only trained in Youth Training (for Pulls). They had nothing as far as Player Training (only used to increase number of players in camp). When I wanted to run camps, I would buy the appropriate SDs. I've started running two camps at the end of one season, and then two at the beginning of the next. Then I can ditch the Player SDs for almost two full seasons.
Coaches I limited to 70/70-80/80. That kept their salary down a bit. Same thing for Physios.
I also kept Custodians and Physicians around 40/40-50/50. Enough to have a decent effect, but not a high salary at all.

On the plus side [of relegating], you could end up with a good chunk of your players on the leaderboards/all-star team. I'm not sure if that helps their popularity but, it is good for the ego.
I'm starting to think that buying managers at the end of the season is the better way to go. I managed to convince myself a couple seasons ago that it would be a money-making strategy to be a manager-farm. This season I sold a manager with 100 marketing the day before sponsorship offers came in for basically exactly the cost of this year's contract, meaning that overall I lost a fair amount of money over the last couple of seasons to get him up to 100.
I did that a few times for both hockey and soccer a couple seasons ago, but I stopped because I was barely saving any money versus just keeping them on the team all season. It just wasn't worth the time spent on the market plus the risk of getting continually outbid and ultimately overpaying.
So now that I've officially promoted, hello! Looks to be a competitive league. Hopefully this won't end up being another one-and-done for me.
Yeah. Too many people have figured it out now. So you have to buy sooner and sooner. I forgot to get them in time a couple of seasons ago. Instead of overpaying for someone just to get me through the season, I went after two younger guys with very low scouting. The low scouting keeps their salaries down.
The Drifters are moving from Arlington to Salt Lake City this season...they'll be the Karma Police as of tomorrow.
Tremble in fear.

Im considering this season sell my veterans players and ride with my youngsters and hope for the best
the return would be relegation to D3 and give me time to build my facilities/arena
"the hope for the best" would be avoid direct relegation and win relegation/promotion match.
what prevents me from doing it is that this forum is active and i dont want to come back to a dead league again

That was my issue a few season ago... I thought it woudl be smart to relegate and dominate the 3rd league... Lost millions.
Cautiously optimistic about my team this season- I'll be running back to back camps to start this season- I do the same as tujague with sporting directors.
After that I should be in a good place, I'm happy with my roster, might try to add 1 stud, but really I want to focus on keeping a good crop of young guys cycling in. My roster was stagnant for a couple seasons and I don't want that to happen again. Need to keep pumping in fresh blood.
Joseph Strong will continue to be the glue that holds this team together.

Oops. Didn't realize I had the change tactics by period on and it cost me. Doesn't help that half the team's in camp.
