Short Notice No Problem For Shortell In Caps Victory
Saturday, June 4th, 2011
Caps pitcher Rory Shortell struck out seven Vipers and gave up just one earned run to get the victory on Saturday night.
Edmonton, AB – Edmonton Capitals pitcher Rory Shortell got about one hour’s notice that he was the starter for Saturday’s game against the Calgary Vipers, but it certainly didn’t faze the right-hander as he was outstanding in a 7-3 victory.
Alexander Francisco was the scheduled starting pitcher for the Caps, but after he fell ill about an hour before game time, Shortell got the call and made the most of it. The Portland, Oregon native tossed eight innings and gave up just one earned run on three hits while striking out seven Vipers to lead the Caps to their fifth win of the season in seven games.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting to start tonight, but it actually helped me out a lot because I didn’t have a long time to think about it and over-analyze,” Shortell said. “The team put up some runs early, which made it a lot easier to challenge hitters. It’s great for us to start the season 5-2.”
Providing a big chunk of the offensive support for Shortell’s solid outing was right fielder and clean-up hitter Tom Collaro, who went 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a home run to go along with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Shortstop Enrique Cruz also knocked one out of the park and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Matt Rogelstad, second baseman Alex Chavez and first baseman Brent Metheny each also had two hits in the game.
Saturday’s game featured the first Saturday Night Movie of the season presented by 96.3 Capital FM and Herbers Autobody, as fans were invited to cozy up in centre field after the game and watch “For Love Of The Game” starring Kevin Costner on the inflatable big screen.
The Caps (5-2) and Vipers (3-6) close out their six-game series at TELUS Field with an afternoon game on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
