Hey, I'm new to this game but slowly picking up and enjoying it. With the practicing for both players and staff, I am doing automatic practice but only see 1 column increase (with the given increased amount) and for about a month now haven't seen any of the other attributes I put practice time into increase. Should I just be doing one attribute at a time or is there really an increase? I mean I have some players with 70-90 quality on the attribute that just aren't increasing. I've been putting about 80 in the core (goalie/off/def) and divide the rest out to say 7-8 into technique or passing. Should I be doing more?
The most common and most agreed-upon formula is the 2-1-1, or 100-50-50. So for every 2 of your primary attribute, put 1 for a secondary attribute. Shooting is also important especially for forwards, but I recommend training shooting for defensemen too if they have a decent quality. Make sure none of your players have a much higher aggressiveness than technique as it will cause more penalties, so it's important to keep technique fairly high for defensemen. I'd slightly tweak all of these attributes based on how high the qualities are.
Thanks for the advice!!
So out of 100, you'd recommend 50primary and 25 each in the secondary. Should I shave from the primary or secondary to throw into shooting?

You can't really think of it out of 100. Most teams train 2-1-1-1 with shooting being the other 1. More elite teams have ratios closer to 10-(7-8 shooting)-5-5.
Ok, so I guess where I'm getting confused is in the automatic practice, it's not a 100% basis, it's a ratio.
How come I'm not seeing progress on the secondary stuff? Even when it's been 10-15 days later I'd hope to see at least a little movement. That's why I'm wondering if this automatic practice worked or if it was something that worked in the past that they changed (They being PPM/programmers)

You can only practice 1 skill per day, and the ratios are used to compare the skill already achieved.
For example, if your Offense has a rating of 40, and a practice ratio of 2, and your Shooting as a rating of 15 and a practice ratio of 1, you will practice Shooting until it gets up to 20. Your Offense/Shooting will then be 40/20, which is the same as your 2/1 that you set up. After that, you will practice Offense until it hits 42, and then Shooting until it hits 21, then Offense to 44, then Shooting to 22, etc.
I'm explaining it REALLY poorly, but hopefully you get the idea.

So it will eventually make those attributes 2:1, not take a "x" amount of practice those them. Ok, that makes more sense to me. It really is just 1 attribute a day, it just changes based on what I have as the practice ratio. Thanks!!
I think you are still confused you said you put 80 in core and 7 to 8 in others. That means your core will train about 10x higher than the other skills.
For automatic training, the numbers do not have to add to 100.
You can set them as 2 1 1 1 which makes the primary train twice as much as the others. lso any skills with 0 would never be trained.
Another method I like is to scout the best player at a given position then put his exact attributes in for your player and he will be trained up to the same numbers.

Hey, initially I was because I thought it was more along a percentage of but I am changing it to the 2-1-1 or 2-1-1-1 now. It's just a different concept to me because I play WIS (online football game) and we use minutes. I also just saw some players that would have 120 offense, then 30 secondary so I wasn't sure if you were suppose to focus more of the off/def then pass/tech/agg.
Thanks everyone for helping me on this!

NO problem.
FWIW, I've been wishing WIS would make a dynasty hockey game for years. This game is REALLY filling the void left by them. I love it!

Defintely agree smoel, I helped show dupa this game and he is getting hooked too, we both looking to leave the other one
I thought i was confused before i read these posts, now im more confused than ever. Based on a 2-1-1 system, am i correct in assuming that the 2 would either go into offense or defense first, then a 1 in which ever attribute you choose? What happens if you put a 2 in say shooting and a 1 in offense? Is that wrong?
2 goes into the primary for whatever position the player plays (Goal, defense, or offense). The 1's are for that positions secondaries.
So a goalie with 100 Goal, would need 50 Tech & 50 Pass to be most effective.

This is always an intersting topic of conversation. So, I'll weigh in with my thoughts, too.
How you set your training matters a great deal. The important point is auto practice works on a ratio basis. Let's just use two skills to build an example. Let's set offense at 100 and tech at 50. The auto train function will train offense until tech is less than 50% of the offense rating. This means that if the skill numbers are far enough apart, you won't see an increase in anything else until the ratios you set are "in balance."
And, that brings us to the downside of ratio training. It can end up taking a long time to train a specific skill because the system keeps putting everything into balance. Continuing our example from above, if today's training gives offense a 0.8 increase, that just changed the ratio to tech. Assuming the numbers a close to proper ratio, the next day it will train tech to attempt to restore the balance. Obviously, the more skills you include in the ratio mix, and the more "in balance" those skills are, the longer it will take to train your primary skill (or which ever one you are hoping to see increase the most).
And, to directly answer you skeptimist. It isn't necessarily wrong to set a secondary or tertiary skill with the highest ratio number. In your example, it would depend on how badly you needed to train shooting while still training other things. Of course, you would not want to leave the ratio like that permanently. But, it might actually be easier, and perhaps smarter, to simply turn off auto training and just train shooting for a while.
And, FWIW, I like using the 100-etc ratio because it's more customizable than a 2-1-1 style ratio. I think it allows better development based on individual attribute quality. I use something like 100-70-50 ratio after I get everyone to a 2-1-1. Shooting is a custom training situation. It depends on attribute quality and how high the rating is to start with. And, I try to keep the third atty (pas, tec, agr) at 30-40.
Any thoughts?
