would you guys consider total shots attempted more important than possession?

that's really more a question of style. But I prefer shots, with only goals ahead of that.

They work together, I think. You want to maximize possession so that you can achieve more shots while preventing your opponent from having many chances.

If you're like my hockey team in real life you always outshoot the opponent 2:1 but goalies love playing against you because your stats get padded. Our forecheck consists of dumping the puck on net. Hence we outshoot a team 44-23 and lose 4-1. That being said, the 23 shots give chances tgat are much MUCH better then the 44 shots. I know we're talking about soccer but in soccer as EC said... they go hand-in-hand. Possession is HUGE but shots matter too. You hold onto the ball forever that means your opponent can't score, but if you don't shoot you're just playing for a tie.

In the football, it also matters where possession is: dominating possession by having 25% possession in defense, does not increase scoring or shots, though it may reduce you opponent's chances. I'll stop here as the permutations go on-and-on...

If you have more possession than your opponent in each zone you're doing okay

lol. True, but if you can be close to even on Off/Def and win Midfield, that usually wins.
