When deciding on my penalty kill i just put in my first and second lines. I was wondering does the defensive attribute of the Forwards help them perform better on the penalty kill?

Yes, it does. Generally, you want your best defensive defensemen and best defensive forwards on the PK. Also make sure your centers have decent technique so they can win faceoffs easier.

My penalty kill is currently hovering around the top eight; it was at the top of the league through most of the first half. My team strength is currently around 13th (though my team is in 10th place and should pass the defunct team).

I tend to use my third liners on my penalty kill and train them to have high defense (for a forward). I bought one player for my second line who happened to have similar defense that I use on the penalty kill. There's a considerable drop off in talent between my second and third line, however my penalty kill has generally been successful. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the power play goals I've given up have been against substantially better teams. I think that I read somewhere that the winger does not necessarily need to be a right winger, though I am not sure about this.
