I played almost the entire season with a 5-4-1 or a 5-3-2 (hadn't seen anyone with the latter) I tried one tactic where I put my strongest, purest defender behind the other defenders and had success doing that.
Ive used a 4-5-1and its worked with great results. the 5 mid fielders help me win posseion every time
i go between a 4-4-2, a 5-3-2 and 3-4-3. depends on how developed my forwards and defenders are. still trying to narrow it down to two basic formations the team plays well, and tweak from there.
but i love good wingers. those that want to use them...you need high speed and high passing...and from what i've seen i suspect tech needs to be up there, too.
with a high pass and low tec the ball will be intecepted if the other team has a good tec and def, or the will be badly made and "miss" the player who u'r passing.
1st season i tried 4-5-1 and got promotion to League I this season i started with a 3-4-3 but it was not working so i changed it to 4-4-2 and got 3rd place on League I plus went to Finals for National Cup.
Next season i want to try again the 3-4-3

3-4-3 is a very aggressive tactic that really requires the talent to support it. If your players are not well developed you will be crushed.
Your midfield must be very talented and be able to transition from offense to defense quickly. They must be able to move and distribute the ball to the forwards but get back quickly on defense after a turnover. Usually playing AMC, DMC and either to MCs or an ML/MR combo works best.
In addition, you defense has to be rock solid because the don't have the usual power of numbers, they have to be able to cover effectively one-on-one until the midfield can support.

Yea you might want to try a 4-3-3 intead. But if you do that you need really strong mid fielders
The last a couple games i used the 3-4-3 and it worked really well but IDK whether that was from some other reson like energy or game importance so i'll also be testing that formation next year.
the problem i have with a 4-3-3 is i have really strong midfielders for the wings. that formation does not leave enough players for the midfield...and you can't play your defenders that far forward i wish this game allowed you to set player position type, and set them on the field at least one band beyond where the game currently decides what the position they are playing is. (i.e. if you set a player on the 3rd band from the goal, the match engine sees that as a midfielder...there are times i would like to play a deefender that far forward.)
Well if his defense rating is high enough, he will still play a defensive role in the third band, like a DMC if in the middle of the third band.
I'm pretty sure the match engine takes that into account. Of course he would have to have some level of midfield in order to be effective in that role.

with all due respect, he would kinda case being a defender then. When you think about it, defenders don't have all that much variation in line ups. I have found that setting your defenders to retain possession and pass works to move them up, unfortunately to all of them. I have a lot of great defenders who influenced offense all year using the possession game. I felt like doing that a few times my self, but in the long run I like how it is set up now.
I've noticed that the recent part of this thread hasn't discussed the relation between formation and playing style. Once I had a bit more success when I sync the two together (along with player ability).

Oh and you are right about the 4-3-3 its not really effective here. I believe that the match engine has a preference towards midfielders. It says as much in the guide. A strong and effective midfielder is necessary for ball possession. A 4-3-3 will lose out on possession too often to utilize the 3 attackers. Of course that really depends on how your opposition is set up. A 4-5-1 will rape you on possession but depending on your tactics and his you may still out chance your opponent.
This is why in some ways football is more interesting than hockey. The combinations are much more complex than the simple wheel that hockey uses.

But, remember this more importantly than anything else. Reading about the tactics that work for other players won't do you a bit of good. You need to evaluate the talents of your players and place them in the positions that you are most effective. Then set your tactics accordingly. Lastly, to gain the edge on your toughest rivals, you need to understand how flexible your players and tactics are and then adjust to your opponent.
If you play formations and players in positions where they are not suitable, your results will suffer.

absolutely, Dark. it always comes down to how your player skills are balanced. it's why i take the time to develop strong wingers. gives the opportunity to spread play out...how much is tough to tell with this engine and the info we get, though. it's also why i think tech plays more into wingers than the guide lets on.
