I second that. Defenceman with tech close to pass and agr have wasted skill points. I try and train around 50-60% of pass and agr.
I tend to train where the highest training percentages are. Seems futile to me to train a defenseman on SH at 40% where his PA is 90%. I'll take more assists as they don't happen without a goal by somebody else. My experience with TECH is that lower TECH in a defenseman puts his penalties up (about 10 a season), but results in more scoring points because the training went elsewhere. His +/- may also drop a little. In the end, I think it best to train where the most can be gained.
I drafted Weston Merson, scouted AvQ's:
Defenseman
Def 98
Pas 92
Tec 98
Agr 74
Goalie
Goa 97
Pas 92
Tec 98
I'm thinking of training him as a goalie.
His Goalie OR is 32 and his Def 104.
He would be starting off very low with his G 32.
As a goalie he only needs to train three ATT's but he would need to train four Att's for Def and his 74 Agr is not great.
What do you think?

Too bad he started off low on GK, but goalie is the more valuable position and he would be amazing eventually. I would go for that.
Goalies with high def have seemed to me to be more consistent in the past, so him starting off with a high defense could be a blessing in disguise. That 74 on agr won't hurt that much though. That guy's a beast!
I would probably leave him as a Defenceman. If his Def OR is 104, his AGR is probably between 50 and 70? If you go goalie you lose 72 OR from DEF, as well as all the points in agr since goalies don’t use that. So you’re losing 100 OR right off the bat by switching. He’s an almost perfect dman. The 74 isn’t bad with all his other Q’s.
If he had a great SH %, and was universal, I might go as a defenseman. He should train higher each day as a goalie which IMO would make that the best option long term. What I really think, is that you should have passed on him as two picks later, he would have been MY problem.
My bad
I had such a busy week I didn't have the time to set up lines. I thought I would do it this morning, but forgot we have to call up players one day ahead of time.
I apologize.

With the next set of adds, the player total will be 41.
Mostly looking at 17 year olds for the rest.
Looking a little weak at goalie for now.
The push for team chemistry will be "full on" in the preliminary games.

Woah, that's a high OR for a kid straight off the academy O_o Added to scouting!
I mean, what's up with all my guys being below 400 OR lately? I'm back in I.1 and have top staff and facilities, why can I not get some OR?
Maybe being in first place suggests you don't need high OR players from the academy?
