Introducing PPM Alerts: Receive PPM Score Updates by Email and/or SMS Text Message!

Introducing PPM Alerts: Receive PPM Score Updates by Email and/or SMS Text Message!

Do you have a job that doesn't allow you to be on PPM? Are you away from your computer but often want to know how your teams are doing? Well, wonder no more. You now have the ability to receive email and/or cell phone text message updates after your PPM games are played!

I have recently been tasked with learning a new programming language by my superiors. In programming, the only way to learn is to write. I got thinking, what would be a good learning project yet also useful? I immediately thought of a tool that sends either an email or text message updating me how my teams did since I can't always check them immediately after an important game! Then, naturally, I wanted to expand it to my fellow PPM peers. So, here's your invitation:

----------

The first thing you need to do is read this article in its entirety. It will explain EXACTLY what is required of you. Chances are if you're not getting your message it is because something was not entered correctly in the form. A link to the form is at the end of this article by design! I don't want people going straight to the form and missing important information. The remainder of the article will outline the various entry fields in the form to ensure you are entering the correct information. The alerts messages are available only in English. If you have any issues with registering or the program please do not hesitate to contact me. Contact information is provided at the end of the article.

Question 1: What teams would you like to receive score alerts for?
This is pretty straight forward. You can select whichever teams you wish to receive alerts for. Ensure that you answer all the required questions (A = hockey, B = soccer,  C = handball, D = basketball) for each sport you wish to register for.

Hockey
Question A1: What is your hockey team's ID number?
You can find this number on your team info page:
http://hockey.powerplaymanager.com/en/team.html. Be sure to enter the correct number and number only!

Question A2: What days would you like to receive hockey alert updates?
This is to let you decide whether you want to receive only league game updates (M,W,F) or friendlies as well. Keep in mind tournament and NC games are played on days that are usually for friendlies.

Soccer:

Question B1: What is your soccer team's ID number?
Please follow the instructions provided to fetch your team's hockey ID only via your soccer team info page.

Question B2: What league (country) does your soccer team participate in?
This is just to get an idea as to when to search for an update to your team. Don't worry, if you're playing a game outside of your usual time (earlier or later) you'll be updated accordingly.

Question B3: What days would you like to receive soccer alert updates?
This is to let you decide whether you want to receive only league game updates (Tu,Th,Su) or friendlies as well. Keep in mind tournament and NC games are played on days that are usually for friendlies.

Handball:

Question C1: What is your handball team's ID number?
Please follow the instructions provided to fetch your team's hockey ID only via your handball team info page.

Question C2: What league (country) does your handball team participate in?
This is just to get an idea as to when to search for an update to your team. Don't worry, if you're playing a game outside of your usual time (earlier or later) you'll be updated accordingly.

Question C3: What days would you like to receive handball alert updates?
This is to let you decide whether you want to receive only league game updates (Tu,W,F,Su) or friendlies as well. Keep in mind tournament and NC games are played on days that are usually for friendlies. It is not currently possible to register to receive tournament updates for handball.

Basketball:

Question D1: What is your basketball team's ID number?
Please follow the instructions provided to fetch your team's hockey ID only via your basketball team info page.

Question D2: What league (country) does your basketball team participate in?
This is just to get an idea as to when to search for an update to your team. Don't worry, if you're playing a game outside of your usual time (earlier or later) you'll be updated accordingly. Note: It is not currently possible to register to receive tournament updates for basketball.

Question D3: Do you want to receive score alerts for your basketball friendly games?
Selecting "Yes" will send you an alert after friendly games. Selecting "No" will only send you alert for league/playoff games. Keep in mind NC games play during the friendly timeslot and as a result alerts for NC games would arrive only when selecting "Yes".

Alert Specifications:

There are two options. You can either select to receive your alerts by email, or by text (or even both!). If you are not interested in receiving text message updates you can skip to question 2a instructions. If you would like to receive text message alerts, please continue reading as this is the trickiest part of the registration.

Question 2: What type of score alerts would you like to receive?
Select email, SMS (text message) or both. If you checked email, be sure to answer 2a. If you checked SMS be sure to answer 2b, 2c, 2d and 2e. Note: SMS is not available in all countries. If you do not receive your SMS please notify me and we'll verify your Twilio information. THIS LINK is a good start to show a list of countries SMS messaging is currently compatible with. I will keep an updated list of countries here that have been tested and work. Working: Canada, Serbia, Slovenia, United States. Unavailable in: Poland, Portugal.

If you go to THIS LINK and see what you see below with a green check beside "Messaging", everything should work!

Throughout testing it became apparent that some countries are not compatible with the text message alert system. If you think you may fall into the category of people where text updates are not an option yet you prefer text updates to emails, there is one more thing we can try. When it comes to Question 2a in the submission form, you enter your email address. However, this doesn't have to be xyz@gmail.com. Most people don't realize but most cell providers have an email address attached to each phone number. In the case of my cell provider, Koodo, a quick Google search of "phone's email address koodo" told me the email address is #########@msg.koodomobile.com. If I put this as my email address, replacing the # signs with my phone number, we can bypass the Twilio setup and receive a score update to your cell phone in countries that are not compatible with Twilio! An example of formats for European carries can be found HERE. Keep in mind, these messages send not as SMS (like a text message) but MMS (like a picture message) which means they'll require a data connection and will count against your monthly cell bandwidth - albeit 1-2 kB per message. Consider this when deciding what your preference is. If you wish to have both an email and this MMS option to your phone, you'll need to either submit twice (once for email, once for MMS) or contact me directly.

Question 2a: If you would selected *email alerts*, please enter the email address you'd like to have them sent to.
Here you enter the email address you'd like to have alerts sent to. Due to the automated (smtp) nature  of these alerts, some email clients may have the alert messages go directly to spam (GMail does this). Be sure to look in your spam folder and set a filter to ensure it makes it to your inbox or to a designated folder. There are various ways to create filters and they depend on your specific type of email client.

Question 2b: If you selected *SMS text alerts*, complete the remaining fields below. First, please enter your cell phone number.
Enter your cell phone number which you'd like to receive the text messages alerts at. Enter only the numbers. Be sure to enter country and area code where applicable. For people in Canada and the United States this means 1-###-###-#### (minus the dash marks).

Questions 2c-2e: Receiving text message updates.
To receive text message updates you need to register with Twilio. It is free and you'll only need to do this once. Instructions on how to do this are posted at the end of this article (below the ## block).

To input your information and make your request to have PPM alerts visit the Google Docs form HERE. None of the submitted information will be shared or distributed. It will remain on a secure server that only I can access. Please note, form data is parsed each morning before the first PPM games. As a result, when you register, if done correctly, your first alert will arrive the next day. Also, this program may go offline from time to time due to internet issues among many other things. I have had issues with Google's SMTP during testing and I have yet to fully resolve it. Please be patient and understanding if you do not get an alert when you expect one.

If you have any comments or notice any problems please do not hesitate to contact me on PPM (click my username at the bottom of this article) or via email at ppm.score.update[at]gmail.com. The same communication channels can be used to remove yourself from the alert list.

To Receive SMS Text Message Updates:

#############################

Twilio will not charge you anything! However, if your cell phone plan does not include free incoming text messages, standard text message charges will apply. I only recommend using this option if you can receive text messages for free.

To receive text message updates visit Twilio's website: https://www.twilio.com/try-twilio

Create a trial account. Trial accounts are free and allow texting to one single number which is all that is needed in this case. You will not be charged at all. Please, don't be alarmed if you see a non-zero value under "Usage" (

After entering your name, a valid email address and a password (don't worry, you should not have to visit this website again), hit "Get Started" and you'll be taken to the next screen. Here, you'll need to input your cell phone number.

After entering your phone number hit "Text Me" and Twilio will send you a verification code to your cell phone and you can enter the contents in the next screen.
The next page, shown in the graphic below, will then provide you with your Twilio phone number. This is what you input into the form for 2c. Input numbers only:

After clicking "Get Started" you'll be taken to another page. You'll then need to click "Go To Your Account". On this page you will find your cell account SID and authentication token.

Copy your account SID into 2d on the form. You will then need to click the lock icon beside "auth token" to view your authentication token. Upon doing so your token will become visible. Paste the contents of "auth token" into 2e on the form. So long as you DO NOT "upgrade", this text messaging service will forever be free.

This was a personal project of canucks357 and is separate from the PPM brand. While an approved project, canucks357 and PPM take no responsibility for any costs incurred with the cell phone messaging system. It is impossible for us to know your exact plan. However, if you can receive free text messages from your friends, you should not incur any extra changes as a result of this option. No ProPack is required to use this product. All users to date have used it free without any unexpected charges. canucks357 reserves the right to withdraw computational resources and intellectual support at any time without notification. I wish to thank those who were patient as I tested the program and worked out the bugs in the early stages: djgurygury, metro56 and kokio86. I also want to thank Mr. Orange for answering my questions when I'd hit a massive roadblock on the road of learning.
