I honestly think it was stupid on their part. Why add fuel to the fire? Was it Dave Hodge on TSN who laid into them saying they've won one playoff series in the last 10 years or something. They win one game then they're "king" shit?
or delivering said elbows?
I'm not jealous of Vancouver (I don't know why everyone thinks it is so great, granted I only spent 2 weeks there).
The Sedins are a reason to dislike the team, but they don't play our hockey. Canadians like to see the rough tough hockey, but the Sedins don't do that, so it isn't as fun to watch (for many).
Personally I think it is just because all of Canada is supposed to unite behind the Canadian teams in the playoffs, but generally people have other allegiances too. One major reason to cheer against the Canucks is because of the Canadian captain issue.

They still hated Vancouver when Lou was captain...
He wasn't really the captain.
It was a cheap publicity stunt.
Goalies cannot be captains. It is in the rule book.

I know. I was going to be C my last year Jr (believe it or not). But it was in the rules there too. So they gave it to the owner's kid. Hahaha
The reason is two-fold.
First off is the issue with the C should be the primary contact with the referee, then one of the two As. If no C is on the roster, three As are permitted.
If a call is at issue on the opposite side of the ice, is the goalie expected to skate to the bench, talk to the coach, then to the far side to talk to the ref, then back to the bench, then finally his net? Goalies are also slower skaters so this definitely slows the game down.
Also, if a goalie is a back-up, he is on the roster and only two As are allowed then. This is an issue with having an A in the box or with getting them onto the ice to talk to the refs.
You'll notice that the letters are often spread out on different lines to increase the presence of them on the ice.

You know, I rather like the slogan some Canuck fans have started, "Embrace the Hate". It's true, the Canucks are the most hated team in the NHL (perhaps Pittsburgh is getting close). But you only are hated if you are good. People used to hate the Flames, now they don't care. If your team is hated, that means they are a threat.
That said, if Kesler and Burrows keep up their play from the first game, the Canucks aren't going to be a threat for too long.

Biznow said it best, "I'd rather be hated then pitied".
I look forward to Calgary getting back in the mix. Not sure what will happen with realignment, but I think the Canucks would benefit greatly from a stronger division. Also, I miss the old Calgary/Vancouver rivalry, it was always good fun to watch.
HAH I've seen that about 50 times, and it still makes me laugh every time
Me too
the commentator's hysteric laugh and how plain stupid and ridiculous Phaneuf looks just gets me every time. Love how he's picking up the gloves and stick in front of the Canucks' bench too, they were razzing the shite out of him!
