I want to get a little discussion about project players. I bought some players many moons ago and they've recently cracked my lineup. I was hoping to stimulate a discussion with others who have done the same to compare and marvel in our cheap purchases who now are near the pride of our team and would fetch top dollar.
My top project players currently in the lineup:
Winger: 601OR (bought 2.5M at 11/25/2009 and 145OR)
Winger: 667OR (bought 350k at 12/21/2009 and 147OR)
Winger: 601OR (bought 275k at 12/14/2009 and 143OR)
Winger: 601OR (bought 245k at 03/15/2010 and 127OR)
Those are my current players who I bought in seasons 2/3 for small coin that now hold spots in my lineup. Hoping to hear from others as well

April of last year I bought a Dman before I understood about qualities and everything. Got him for 150,000. He is now one of my top defenders. After i learned about scouting and whatnot ue had some good qs. One of the only foreign players to survive my change over to almost all Canadian talent. He is the longest servine player on my team also!!!
I bought Andrej Rybak in season 4 for 5.25 mil, and he's now my starting goalie. But I don't think that counts as a true project, as he was a starter by the end of that season.
Pavel Gojda is probably the closest. I bought him in season 5 (a year ago) for 1.1 mil; he's now good enough to be the no. 4 center on my team. His OR is 445, but he's got decent talent.
Daniel Bellaz has really come along. I bought him in season 5 for 1.5 mil, and he's currently our best center (at the time he was probably 3rd or 4th best.). Not exactly amazing story, I know.

I bought Tommi Wilenius "by accident" for 30K during season 4, my 1st one. He has been my 1st for more than a season now. However, he's 23 with CL 3, so it might not last long...
I have 6 other players from the market in my starting lineup, bought from 10K to 80K. Although they're probably still there because I bought them when I started playing, not because there're outstanding players...

I've bought a bunch of players with high qualities, and perfect career longevities, but not necessarily with the skill to make it, but they train really well, and get to a playable ratio in around a year. I currently have 5 players over 75% AvgQ that I've gotten for that reason, spending around a total of 20 mil.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I've since done the same thing in soccer as it worked in hockey. Bought a bunch of low OR high AQ guys around season 2/3 for cheap in hopes of flipping them come season 7/8. However at that point I can't see myself unloading them. Looking back though I'm glad I made these purchases and am a long-term thinker. Had I not I'd be in a much worse position than I already am and being patient likely saved me multi-millions if I had tried to buy players now with those qualities and OR right away.
A lot of the times, people overlook amazing players, when they have a low bundle, yet very very good qualities. They want players for the now, not to build for the future, you can get steals if you look enough, or just get lucky!
Ya you do have to be careful though. Buy players too low in OR and it'll take too long to catch up and when they do their CL will make them not worth the time/money invested. I've stopped buying soccer players under 300OR for that reason. Hockey players I've stopped buying altogether for the most part. I have enough and enough good Qs and I need to pinch my pennies.
I don't buy players. 99% of my team is homegrown, and I've only bought depth players for the sake of filling out my Friendly (AHL) roster.
Well la-ti-da Good on ya. My SA doesn't provide me with the Rowan Craigs of PPM so I'm forced to purchase my Qs.
I have a bunch of roster players, none of them stars, who were purchased in seasons 3 and 4 on the cheap. They've all been serviceable starters/backups. I expect to profit when I sell them.
