I don't think so. I'm hoping we get a lot of div 2 and 3 clubs. When there are big div 1 clubs it can get ugly.
I have what I feel like is a dumb question since I've read the guide, but just can't wrap my head around it.
From what I understand, playing games is good because your players earn experience which boosts their performance. However they also lose energy which negatively effects their training.
So assuming I at least understand that correctly, is it correct to say then that playing friendlies is a good thing? Or should I be careful about playing too many friendlies?
Is there a big difference between competition games and friendly games?

playing friendlies is really good if you play at low importance. You don't affect your seasonal energy THAT much by playing friendlies on low.
So you gain experience, you gain money, you build chemistry and you pay with a bit of energy, but not a lot.
For example, I played almost every day (friendlies, league, and some tournaments), and my regulars who played all games have a seasonal energy of about 92-93 out of 100.
If you're smart, it really pays off.

I agree with saint. My guys played every day on low (for both league and friendlies) and played normal for a couple of cup games and they still had 95 energy at seasons end,
It takes 50 friendly games on low to drop even one energy point.

What about the loss in training though? Is it significant enough to outweigh the benefits of added income, experience, etc.?
I played everyday except 2 for the entire season, played all reg season league games on low, played friendlies on mix of low and norm with subs and a few regulars (with low chem). I have played all playoff games at Normal so far,
I am now in game 3 of the I.1 final and my energy levels are 93-94 and my line chems are 99/95/92/85 going into the game.
The extra money, chem and exp is well worth it IMO.

Others may feel differently, but I think it is. If you keep building your regen facility the difference in training between guys who play and guys who don't isn't huge. You can also rotate players and give guys rest to boost training if you feel the need.
To me the most important benefit of friendlies is the money. It doesn't cost you any money to play and it helps to offset your daily costs. Next to that is the chance to try different lineups. Experience, chemistry are just added bonuses.
But like I said, this is how I view things.

I play friendlies every day. What I do is play my A team players that have chemistry lower than 100. As soon as they reach chemistry 100, I give them rest and 100% training and give someone else a chance. As the guys above me have mentioned, you gain extra experience, chemistry, money and one more thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - extra team coefficient. Small values, but win 10 friendlies and it gives you a full value of 1 league win.
Play games every day!
Play games every day!
My team for the last 3 seasons has only ever had 4 lines and up to 6 scratched players. I think i might start building up more potential players.
i thin you guys are talking me into friendlies
i took alot of days off just because i wanted the training bonus
but this year i think i want chemestry

I've never taken a day off... even if i play my main team. I simply don't like "not" playing. LOL
i dont have a main team and other team
i have one team, hopefully as my academy gets higher i get players worth keeping

that's what i mean... i only have a single team who play most games.
