my team is getting throttled every single game, mostly losing by or near double digits and hardly scoring. i just joined a few days ago, is there anything i can do? or do i need to wait until i reach manager level 11 so i can buy players off the market???

Yea basically your stuck. Don't improve your arena at all until you see a trend of sellouts or close to often. Facilities are your best friend, but you will need staff to make them work well no matter how high they are.
The market is good, but don't get caught in a bidding war. You could easily over pay on a player if your not careful.

uh ohhhhh i've done a bit of upgrading - the guide said to start on it early. but i've got some money left and i've seen solid players i can easily afford (i think). thanks for the advice!
No problem.
that's good. Your facilities you NEED TO upgrade, I was referring to ONLY the arena. It is never too early to build facilities, sadly I learned that the hard way.

Well, I always recommend to max out your small stands right away - it's cheap, only takes 1 day, and doubles your money from home games since even a brand new team should sell 800 seats every game. You can put it off for a little while if there's someone you really want off the market, but you definitely want it done before you get a media offer for next season (which will be in May).
ohhh i got ya, yeah i haven't done any arena upgrades yet, but that's a good call zomg, thanks!
I'd primarily worry about adding snack and merchandise stands if you're having trouble selling tickets. The income they generate is minimal at a starting level. I started midway through last season and playing almost a game a day since I started, between shared income from friendlies and my own stands, I've accumulated only $195,016 from them. Assuming I had played a game a day, that averages out to $1,667/day (and I have played almost a game a day) and doesn't take into account the added cost of maintaining them. Obviously I haven't had stands the whole time, but I'm just trying to give you and idea.
To summarize: if you want to up your attendance and don't see upgrading past maxing out your small stands like zomg suggested for awhile, it couldn't hurt, but it won't help your income greatly. DO NOT upgrade them before maxing your small stands if you plan on doing that.

makes sense. also, i'm a bit confused on how to approach game importance. since, obviously, my regen facilities aren't superior, should i be keeping it at "normal" in the early stages? or can i afford to up it a little?
If you're playing a team that's close enough to your team strength that you think you can beat them, I'd at least use normal. When you begin buying players you'll probably find that you shoot past some teams in your league in strength and can use lower importance on them.
The main question in using importance is whether you want to win now or later. The best thing I can say is set it only high enough to win, and if you're facing a team you don't have a prayer against, set it as low as possible to conserve energy. If you're like I was, you'll end up upgrading your entire team anyway, so if that's your plan you can play as high as you need to until you can buy players in order to win now since your new guys will likely have decent energy left.

sweet, upped it to "high" and got my first victory!! probably helped that he had his set to "low"

do i need to be accepting youth players? or should i just let them go for the time being?? i've grabbed two already.
Anyone with 3 stars or better you should grab. Eventually you'll up that to 3.5 stars or better when 3 star players are no longer good enough to make the team.
I'd keep taking them. Supposedly players are of the same quality, but as your sports academy improves they get trained more at the academy. So you could pull a player with an average Q of 80, but with an overall rating of 150 rather than 250.
An easy way to scout players is to simply train them a day at each skill. There is some day-to-day variation, but a 90Q skill will still train a lot faster than a 30Q skill. If you just train at the 6 skills, and add them up, you can rank their talent. You can then also get an idea if they are more suited for offense or defense.
If the estimated Q for goalie is reasonable, go ahead and give him a day of goalie training.
New players have low salaries and are pretty cheap to fire, so I'd take every player that is offered for now. Eventually, you can be more picky.
Staff is a more expensive, you have to pay a full season salary. But until you are staffed, you might just take everyone. Later on, you will want to be more picky.

In hockey, the playoffs are a pretty significant part of the season, so it is conventional to play on very low or low, and then crank it up at the end. But in your case, I doubt that you can get into the Top 8 in your league (38 matches in the season). So you will just be playing for bragging rights in the playoff.
Next season, you can be more conservative trying to save energy, while say trying to get into the top 8. You can go very low against the elite teams and you will still lose, and you will be able to go very low against dead teams, and still win. And then maybe play more intense against the teams that you are fighting for placement with.
