It's hard to tell. I've had decent luck selling worse guys on the market recently, but they were also younger (17, 17, and 18).
On thursday night, I witnessed these two guys: Juan José Nogueira , Lorenzo Echavarria sell for $19.53m and $50m respectively... I mean sure, both are national team players... but I can't believe either of them is worth that much.
The first was a horribly trained goalie (he had an eOR of 375 or something lol)... and he's 24 freaking years old... so he'll be an RFA in just over a season from now. I'm also pretty sure that he's the 3rd string goalie on the National Team (I'm not even sure if he's been called up at all this season).
The second guy was a wing with an eQ of 69... DESPITE BEING 5/6 CL still. It's an absolute possibility that he could drop to 4/6 CL in the off-season, making him even worse... so I'd imagine that the buyer paid that premium for his pretty decent OR and nothing more.
So people are definitely spending money... often in unpredictable and, in my opinion, retarded ways. It's just a matter of getting lucky and being there when it hits.

FYI :
I just listed my pivot Les Horner for sale a couple of days ago, and he hasn't received any bids yet. He's 20 years old, is over 700 OR, and has qualities in the high 80s and 90s for Fip, Pas, Tec, and Agr. He's actually a bit of a stud as far as I'm concerned, especially since he's trained better than pretty much every other pivot available.
I'm really hoping to get some bidding pressure on him though, because I'd love to see at least $10m or so come out of that sale. But who knows if he'll go for much...
If I were you, I'd keep an eye on next Wednesday and Thursday. Including my guy, there's 4-5 auctions ending on those two days for pivots that are at least 700 OR.
Use those auctions as comparables, and decide based off of them if you want to consider selling your guy.

Whoa, I was first to finish my arena? Sweet! I still need all of the fan shops and stuff, but I'm waiting to build those to try upgrade some facilities.
yeah, i stopped mine for a while and i will finish mine in 18 days. I have build the upgrades i wanted already
Upgrades make a difference on VIP lounge lease, but idk if it makes an impact on media sponsor.
Thanks - Horner is better than the player I would sell but he is close enough that I will keep an eye on him. It looks like a lot of those players may be asking for too much.
Arena upgrades are largely just a money sink imo. Maxing out your snack bars will cost $69m alone, and will cost you 15m per season in upkeep costs (not including any reductions from maintenance centers).
I find it hard to believe that they increase your media sponsorship offers enough to justify them (even if building them does add to the value of your contracts).
I see value mainly in the VIP lounges and the fan shops, but only because they earn some money back.
I probably won't even consider touching the other pieces until i one of the following happens:
1) I have trouble winning games (I'll build press boxes),
2) I have trouble getting attendance numbers where I want them, or
3) I finish off my facilities.

Good points. I agree its probably not worth it, but worth mentioning. What I cant figure out is wether all of them or a specific upgrade makes the difference. Also im not sure it even makes a difference for media.
Fan shop gives good money but only worth if you have superstars or worldwide stars. But it isnt that much.
Press Center give good advantage at home. building them only if one is having issues winning games wont help much as still have trouble to win away games. Having them will help to decide when its time to upgrade players ...

Marcin Trocki was thrust into action and played his first game for me today because Vince Langley went down with an injury.
Needless to say, I don't think he's quite ready yet to be a staple on my team. He had 3/7 of my 2-minute penalties in the game, and earned the 2nd red card I've been awarded so far this season. That's right, my entire team made it 49 games only getting 1 red card. It took him but a single game to match that.
Not only that, but he was only playing OFFENSIVE wing. Why are you fouling so much on offense, buddy?
Yeeeeeah... I think you've got a bit more grooming to do.

I'd feel bad for you except you played Normal instead of the Very Low I was hoping for after you had already clinched the regular season title, thus killing my slim playoff chances.
At least my team is semi-competitive now as opposed to when I first moved up here.

In all honesty, about a week ago I was looking at the standings, and figured that I could probably save some energy since the odds were pretty good that I'd finish in 1st place anyways.
So I played VL against [handball_team=16029], and lost.
The loss itself didn't so much bother me, but when my next home game earned me ~$2m less in ticket sales, I was VERY unhappy.
So after that short-lived experiment, I decided to just play on Normal (no higher, no lower) the rest of the way..
Given that this is the best time of year for ticket sales, AND my arena would be increasing in capacity by 5000 by the end of this week, I decided not to dick around too much with my attendance numbers.

Damn. Before that explanation, I was annoyed. Now I can't even be that because your reason makes too much sense.
Played a game on VL, lost, had a 96 % chaance of winning.
From now on, I'll do your expert analysis, and you can throw credits my way. When you lose games and want to know what your chance of winning was, you can pay me cash and I'll make up some arbitrary percentage for you.
Just like PPM's expert analysis, you won't gain any real wisdom or actionable information. But it'll give you whatever peace of mind you seem to get from knowing that you lost a game against all odds.
Trust me, I can use the credits much more efficiently than that bum expert analyst ever could...

Thanks for being cool about it...
I will definitely give you props on your team's improvement this season though. I was actually looking at your facilities the other day, and they're pretty impressive for such a "late riser."
I would imagine that with your TF what it is, you'll likely be a lock for the playoffs next season... there's nothing wrong with bidding your time. Hell, I've been doing it (in a fashion) for like 4-5 seasons now.
Zzzz.
